Channeling Emotions–Depression

Many people get overwhelmed with their emotions. That does not always have to happen, especially when you are able to transform the energy from negative emotions into positive actions. Confronted with emotional upheaval, you can grow from that distress.

Consider, for instance, depression, which can occur when you are not getting much pleasure out of life. Sometimes it is due to the loss of a loved one; in this case you usually get better over time. Sometimes depression results from a common life change like moving, taking a new job, getting divorced (or married!), or even having a child. In those cases, eventually your emotional distress should abate. The transient depressive mood state is signaling that you need to adjust to new circumstances in your life.

When transient depression is due to avoidance of anxiety or fear, and leads to underachievement or exhaustion, the depression is telling you to shape up and move into action to meet relevant goals. When this depression involves self-anger, the anger turns inward, and you can use this anger to become more competitive, persistent, creative, and assertive. In this case, you need to let the depression guide and motivate you to change what you need. The irony of depression is that it causes you to stop doing what you need to do in order to feel better. However, when you accept that depression is not all negative, and that you can choose to embrace its energy and transform it into positive action, you have increased your personal power. Give this notion of using depression to work for you with some serious thought. The idea is somewhat counterintuitive and requires some reflection. But we know the process can work if you are willing to put forth an effort to make it work. And, yes, you may need professional help to do so.
